Considérée comme la grande soeur de l'Austin Mini, la Metro a été l'autre grande citadine britannique du groupe British Leyland/Austin Rover. Elle a connu une longévité exceptionnelle, de près de vingt ans, de 1980 à 1998 et a été produite à plus de 2 millions d'exemplaires, un niveau record de production. Elle a arboré successivement les marques Austin, MG pour les versions sportives, puis Rover dans ses dernières années, dans une version sérieusement restylée, baptisée Rover 100.
L'austin Metro a connu un réel succès en Europe dans les années 1980, concurrençant les Renault 5 et Peugeot 205. Elle a par ailleurs connu des déclinaisons sportives célèbres, sous le nom de MG Metro Turbo. Elle a même participé à des rallyes au milieu des années 1980. An engaging collection of short stories featuring some of the more unusual products that came out of Longbridge, such as the 40hp motorcar, probably the first motor home ever built, and the bi-plane small enough to keep in your garage.
Synopsis

An entertaining collection of true stories that feature just a few of the products manufactured by the Austin Motor Company from 1906 until the outbreak of the Second World War, including the people who helped to make them, those who drove them, and even those who flew them.
Although the history of the Austin Seven and Taxicabs have been covered before in much greater detail elsewhere, you will find within these pages the stories of many other Austin creations: the Austin 12/6 which could be won by smoking Kensitas cigarettes; the Austin 20 which competed in the 1914 Austrian Alpine Trial; the remarkable racing car named ‘Pobble’ which went on to serve as an ambulance during the First World War, and the Australian couple who, in 1926, decided to drive their Austin Twelve right around Australia. The Music Hall artist, George Clarke, who performed on stage with his Austin Seven, and the ‘Austin Unity Song,’ a recording of which was presented to guests at the Company’s Annual dinner, are just two more fascinating stories which go to make up this Austin Anthology.

This came as a 2+2 seater, joined in 1958 by a two-seat version. Both were replaced by the more powerful 3000 model in 1959, again offered as a two-seater or 2+2, and available with disc brakes. The Mk II 3000, launched in 1961, could be had either as a 132bhp two-seater with triple carburettors and side screens, which only sold in small numbers, or as the less spartan 2+2 convertible with wind-up windows, and the final version was the 2+2-only 1964 Mk III, now with 150bhp, a wood-veneered dash and better appointments.
All these "Big Healeys" are as much admired and sought-after today as when they were new, offering a splendid mix of looks and performance as well as the traditional sports car attributes of open-air motoring and a gutsy exhaust note.                     [sinopsis_editor] => In much the same manner as Henry Ford's Model T had earlier helped to put America on wheels, Herbert Austin's diminutive Seven was intended to bring motoring within the reach of everyone in Britain. Both of these historic cars have their own individual design and engineering idiosyncrasies but they are rightly regarded with great affection by countless enthusiasts around the world. The Austin Motor Company was established at Longbridge, Birmingham, in 1906 and during the period leading up to the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 produced a number of unremarkable, but reliable cars. The factory expanded at an amazing rate in World War One, producing massive amounts of munitions and military equipment as the workforce increased almost tenfold. Like so many other industrialists of the period, by 1918 Herbert Austin had become an incredibly wealthy person due to lucrative wartime contracts.
Embracing the concept of mass production in order to keep the vast Longbridge plant viable, so in 1919 Austin introduced a slightly revamped version of the pre-war Twenty model. However, the Twenty was too expensive to sell in the quantities needed to keep the company profitable and by 1921 the business was in the hands of the receivers. Following a restructuring, Herbert Austin regained control and brought out the smaller Twelve in 1922. This was a very successful car which remained in production until 1935. Despite the good sales achieved by the Twelve, Austin decided that a cheaper, even more compact model was required. The task of designing this new car was given to eighteen-year-old Stanley Edge, a draughtsman who worked on the project at Herbert Austin's country house in order to avoid prying eyes at the factory. It was Edge who insisted on using a four-cylinder engine and he was responsible for creating the original quirky little open tourer which became universally known as the Austin Chummy.

By the spring of 1923 the engine capacity had been increased to 747cc (from 696cc) and it would stay the same size until production of the Seven came to an end in 1939. In the intervening years the specification evolved gradually as a variety of upgrades were incorporated to enhance the Seven’s serviceability and performance. Body styles also proliferated, with various sports models and special saloons offered by a number of coachbuilders. From the outset the tiny Austin competed in races and rallies, winning awards for many years and overcoming the oft-quoted handicaps of its unpredictable road holding and indescribable brakes with aplomb. As a result of all this the Seven became a very fashionable car in the 1920s. The top-seller in its class, Herbert Austin's baby killed off practically every one of the cyclecars and lightweight models offered by rival manufacturers.

Improvements to the Seven range continued throughout the 30s, with the introduction of a long wheelbase version and the arrival of the Ulster and Ruby models among the high points. The slightly larger Austin Ten made its debut in 1932 and, although noted more for its ruggedness than its rapidity, this model instantly became another chart-topper for the company. More rounder styling appeared across the board in 1937, but World War Two halted civilian car production and marked the end for both the Seven and the Ten.
