John Christopher takes a fresh look at 100 years of Britain's most iconic car company, Aston Martin. From the origins of the Aston Martin marque, through the gadget-laden stars of numerous James Bond films, to the prestigious super-cars that continue to be market leaders throughout the world. Aston Martin was nearly called Bamford Martin, as founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford were already selling cars together, but in the end the company was named after the Aston Hill speed hill-climb near Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire. Their first car was produced in 1915 but war and financial troubles often tempered progress and the company went through various changes in ownership on its way to becoming the global icon it is today. Following the typical Story book format, this sleekest of cars is celebrated with a wealth of colour photographs, facts and statistics. JOHN CHRISTOPHER was trained as a designer but became a professional balloon pilot just over twenty years ago. He now splits his time between flying, working with airships, and writing on all aspects of transportation. This began with a twelve-year stint as the editor of Aerostat, the main ballooning journal, and has led on to the publication of over twenty books... so far. He has previously written The Zeppelin Story, The London Bus Story and The Apollo Story for The History Press, among many others. When not flying one of his main interests is classic British cars - especially the Aston Martin! - See more at: http://www.thehistorypress.co.uk/index.php/the-aston-martin-story.html#sthash.vLu6ZRqR.dpuf

The Company survived the Second-world-war, but only just. Gordon Sutherland, though he had an exciting prototype in ‘Atom’, realised that he did not have the funds to take the necessary steps to get it into production. David Brown, an industrialist from Yorkshire, was the next enthusiast to take the name forward, along with Lagonda, which he had also purchased, and produced som...

This collection of road tests and other articles centring on Aston Martin, records the gradual development of the DBS, the successor to the DB6 Mk2, with the six-cylinder 4-litre engine into the mighty 170 m.p.h. The DB7 with its 3.2 litre, straight six-cylinder engine, was the car that allowed the company to turn the corner. All sorts of criticism was levelled at it: “It’s not an Aston Martin, it is only a sexed up Jaguar.” “It has a pressed steel body, it cannot be an Aston Martin, they should have hand built bodies in aluminium.” “They plan to make lots of them, cannot be an Aston.” ...
