Aston Martin est depuis plus de cent ans une des plus célèbres marques automobiles britanniques. Créée en 1913 par Lionel Martin et Robert Bamford, son capital est aujourd'hui détenu par un important groupe industriel italien et des intérêts du Koweit, alors que la marque Mercédès (Daimler-Benz) vient de rejoindre les actionnaires. Le nom Aston Martin vient bien sûr en partie du nom de son fondateur mais aussi de celui d'une célèbre course de côte du sud de l'Angleterre, Aston Hill, dans laquelle Lionel Martin s'était illustré.
Véhicule préféré du fameux James Bond, Aston Martin crée des voitures de luxe, de sport et de course. La marque a fondé sa réputation sur une exigence de qualité permanente, alliant élégance extrême, luxe rare et performances exceptionnelles à un goût prononcé pour la perfection. Entre ces deux dates extrêmes, et en passant par l’année 1928 lorsque la marque participait à sa première course d’endurance au Mans, jamais Aston Martin n’a complètement délaissé les circuits, où que ce soit dans le monde.

Sans la compétition automobile et son exigence absolue, Aston Martin n’existerait sans doute plus aujourd’hui. En effet l’excellence de la marque vient pour une large part de l’expérience acquise sur les circuits depuis des dizaines d’années.

Even he could not resist putting his reputation on the line by striving for outright success in sports car and grand prix racing. He did achieve his ambition with the DBR1 in 1959 by winning the Le Mans 24 Hour race along with the World Championship for Sports Cars. With this success ‘under his belt’, he decide to retire from racing to concentrate on the next designs. However, pressure from a French dealer brought him back into racing with the Project cars, but while very effective, the will was not present so permanent retirement came in 1963. Meanwhile, the DB2 and its offspring, the DB2-4 series, which were the first sporting hatchbacks, satisfied the enthusiast and were followed by the DB4 with its sleek coachwork designed in Italy and its more sporting brother, the DB4GT and its sexy sibling, the DB4GT with coachwork by Zagato. The super-car era had now arrived and the DB5, made famous by Agent 007, James Bond, was followed by the DB6, now rather more a grand tourer than sports car. As has been the story so far, life at Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd was far from easy and the following David Brown story in which an opportunist friend sidled up to him asking to be sold a car at ‘cost’, to which David reacted with enthusiasm suggesting that it would be the first car he had sold without personal subsidy. The story may be apocryphal but serves to illustrate the Company difficulties that seemed to bedevil them. Included are road tests, new model reports & performance data. At the same time, the Company decided on a return to motor racing, which manifested itself in the V8 AMR1 series of Group ‘C’ racers. However, money, or rather the lack of it, was still a worry and when in 1987, the Ford Motor Company took an interest in taking Aston Martin into their range, Gauntlet and Livanos recognised the wisdom of accepting their offer. With the might of Ford behind them, the V8 cars continued to increase in luxury and power and the AMR1 entered its first season of international racing. However, its continued appearance in 1990 was thwarted by some very doubtful rule changes at the end of 1989 and the team was reluctantly wound up. Nevertheless the cars have seen some success in historic races of the early years of the 21st century. It did the trick, some 7049 were made including its V12 brother and the various special versions such as the 100 Zagato bodied V12s. A fantastic achievement when one realises that since 1920, only some 12,000 cars of all types had been made! At about this time, Ford created the Premier Automotive Group (PAG), which brought tog-ether Aston Martin, Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover which allowed them to share expertise. The Vanquish V12 brought back the ‘super-car’, but the new V12 DB9, made in the company’s first purpose built, up-to-date, factory at Gaydon, not far from Warwick, restored the hand-built image but with added up-to-date engineering features.
