Aston Martin est depuis plus de cent ans une des plus célèbres marques automobiles britanniques. Créée en 1913 par Lionel Martin et Robert Bamford, son capital est aujourd'hui détenu par un important groupe industriel italien et des intérêts du Koweit, alors que la marque Mercédès (Daimler-Benz) vient de rejoindre les actionnaires. Le nom Aston Martin vient bien sûr en partie du nom de son fondateur mais aussi de celui d'une célèbre course de côte du sud de l'Angleterre, Aston Hill, dans laquelle Lionel Martin s'était illustré.
Véhicule préféré du fameux James Bond, Aston Martin crée des voitures de luxe, de sport et de course. La marque a fondé sa réputation sur une exigence de qualité permanente, alliant élégance extrême, luxe rare et performances exceptionnelles à un goût prononcé pour la perfection. D'une simple notoriété dans les années 1950, la marque a accédé au statut de légende en remportant les 24 Heures du Mans en 1959.

Entre ces deux dates extrêmes, et en passant par l’année 1928 lorsque la marque participait à sa première course d’endurance au Mans, jamais Aston Martin n’a complètement délaissé les circuits, où que ce soit dans le monde.

Sans la compétition automobile et son exigence absolue, Aston Martin n’existerait sans doute plus aujourd’hui. En effet l’excellence de la marque vient pour une large part de l’expérience acquise sur les circuits depuis des dizaines d’années. 

Parmi les grands noms actuels des constructeurs automobile, il en reste quelques-uns qui, dès leur naissance, ont construit leur renommée sur la course : Aston Martin est l’un d’eux.

Gordon Sutherland, though he had an exciting prototype in ‘Atom’, realised that he did not have the funds to take the necessary steps to get it into production. David Brown, an industrialist from Yorkshire, was the next enthusiast to take the name forward, along with Lagonda, which he had also purchased, and produced some of the most sought after sporting machines. Even he could not resist putting his reputation on the line by striving for outright success in sports car and grand prix racing. He did achieve his ambition with the DBR1 in 1959 by winning the Le Mans 24 Hour race along with the World Championship for Sports Cars. With this success ‘under his belt’, he decide to retire from racing to concentrate on the next designs. However, pressure from a French dealer brought him back into racing with the Project cars, but while very effective, the will was not present so permanent retirement came in 1963. Meanwhile, the DB2 and its offspring, the DB2-4 series, which were the first sporting hatchbacks, satisfied the enthusiast and were followed by the DB4 with its sleek coachwork designed in Italy and its more sporting brother, the DB4GT and its sexy sibling, the DB4GT with coachwork by Zagato. The super-car era had now arrived and the DB5, made famous by Agent 007, James Bond, was followed by the DB6, now rather more a grand tourer than sports car. As has been the story so far, life at Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd was far from easy and the following David Brown story in which an opportunist friend sidled up to him asking to be sold a car at ‘cost’, to which David reacted with enthusiasm suggesting that it would be the first car he had sold without personal subsidy. The story may be apocryphal but serves to illustrate the Company difficulties that seemed to bedevil them. Included are road tests, new model reports & performance data. V8 Vantage. By default, it also chronicles the various upheavals that occurred in the company between the years 1972 when Sir David Brown sold the company to Company Developments, its near certain death in 1974 and its revival by the Sprague-Minden-Curtis-Flather consortium. The latter group took the company to new realms with the mighty 400b.h.p. V8 Vantage, a concept car called Bulldog, the William Towns Lagonda V8 ‘wedgy’ and paved the way to the Gauntlet-Livanos era. During this time, the company stayed away from motorsport, leaving that to private owners of which there were many. But that would change in a few years time. Despite a diminished market brought about by the stringent emission laws of the USA that excluded the V8 until 1978 when the company was able to make the V8 comply. The Company managed to hang on by attracting new investors. However, the optimistic suggestions of the numbers to be built never manifested itself, though the V8 Lagonda gave them a lifeline by finding a ready market in the Arab states in the middle-east. Victor Gauntlet arrived in 1980 and a new impetus was found, though even he would be finding life difficult, notwithstanding his efforts to gain new momentum. These two rekindled the link with Zagato, who brought to life the V8 Zagato. The Lagonda V8 continued to keep their heads above water and they also gave support to a number of private racing teams, such as Nimrod, EMKA and others by supplying engines, re-engineered by a subsidiary, Tickford Ltd, to a racing specification. On the production front, they brought about the next push forward in 1988 with the introduction of the brand new Virage, powered by a new 5.3 litre, 32-valve V8. At the same time, the Company decided on a return to motor racing, which manifested itself in the V8 AMR1 series of Group ‘C’ racers. However, money, or rather the lack of it, was still a worry and when in 1987, the Ford Motor Company took an interest in taking Aston Martin into their range, Gauntlet and Livanos recognised the wisdom of accepting their offer. With the might of Ford behind them, the V8 cars continued to increase in luxury and power and the AMR1 entered its first season of international racing. However, its continued appearance in 1990 was thwarted by some very doubtful rule changes at the end of 1989 and the team was reluctantly wound up. Nevertheless the cars have seen some success in historic races of the early years of the 21st century. It was becoming clear that there was a need for a model that would bring in a steady flow of cash from a new market; there just were not enough very wealthy buyers to go around! 1993 saw the establishment of Aston Martin (Oxford) Ltd, based at the TWR works at Bloxham near Banbury. It was from here that the answer would emanate in a years time. Included are road tests, new model reports & performance data. All sorts of criticism was levelled at it: “It’s not an Aston Martin, it is only a sexed up Jaguar.” “It has a pressed steel body, it cannot be an Aston Martin, they should have hand built bodies in aluminium.” “They plan to make lots of them, cannot be an Aston.” And so on. However, something had to be done, and Walter Hayes pressed the Ford Board into agreeing to the project, notwithstanding their misgivings. It did the trick, some 7049 were made including its V12 brother and the various special versions such as the 100 Zagato bodied V12s. A fantastic achievement when one realises that since 1920, only some 12,000 cars of all types had been made! At about this time, Ford created the Premier Automotive Group (PAG), which brought tog-ether Aston Martin, Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover which allowed them to share expertise. The Vanquish V12 brought back the ‘super-car’, but the new V12 DB9, made in the company’s first purpose built, up-to-date, factory at Gaydon, not far from Warwick, restored the hand-built image but with added up-to-date engineering features. The advent of the DB9 saw the Company’s return to motor racing in 2005 with the DBR9 taking part in the GT1 class of sport/racing and achieving significant success at their first meeting in the Sebring 12 Hours. The end of 2005 heralded a racing car aimed at the amateur racer, the DBRS9. Included are road tests, new model reports & performance data.
