Désargenté, il débute comme beaucoup, avec d’anciens véhicules militaires vendus aux stocks, choisissant un modèle emblématique, le moderne et robuste américain Liberty. Il va transformer cet utilitaire, pendant plusieurs décennies, l’améliorant sans cesse et le déclinant en de multiples versions, jusqu’à ce qu’il devienne un vrai “Willeme, le roi du poids lourd”, un des meilleurs et plus puissants camions français. Grands routiers, camions de chantier, de pompiers, citerniers, bennes de carrières ou tracteurs se succèdent et, en 1931, sort le premier super-lourd DG 30, suivi d’un inédit ensemble Rail-Route l’année d’après, puis de nombreux autres remarquables modèles. En 1936, est produit un étonnant tracteur lourd à grande cabine couchette et moteur 8 cylindres en ligne de 150-225 ch. Puis, en 1939, le premier Géant, le 110 tonnes (sur 18 roues) avec sa très belle double cabine avancée, qui sera suivi, après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, du W 200, un monstre à long capot abritant le 8 cylindres en ligne de 26 m x 4,80 m, 28 roues et 205 200 kg ! En 1952 sont présentés les vraiment nouveaux et réussis Nez de requin, vedettes du Salon de Paris et un des plus grands succès de la marque. À partir de 1954 arriveront d’autres superbes, et très grosses, réalisations : les Sahariens. Mais aussi la maladie pour le Patron (remplacé par son fils Pierre) et aussi, le début d’une grave crise dans le secteur de l’automobile, qui doit se regrouper… Et ce sera le temps des partenariats… D’abord avec le français Unic, puis les britanniques AEC et BMC qui ne verront pas leurs efforts en commun récompensés. Mais fidèle au rêve du Patron, la firme finira avec des camions gigantesques : les fameux et toujours spectaculaires “Transports Exceptionnels” (que reprendront PRP), mais qui ne résisteront pas eux aussi, aux chocs pétroliers de 1973 et 1978.
