Inauguré en 1970, le circuit Paul Ricard a définitivement fermé ses portes au public à l’automne 2000 après avoir été le temple mondial du sport automobile et motocycliste. Nul autre que François Chevalier, qui en fut le directeur pendant trente ans, ne pouvait mieux conter la grande et la petite histoire de ce ruban d’asphalte sur lequel ont évolué les plus grands champions et les plus célèbres marques automobiles et motocyclistes, sans oublier les courses de camions qui déplaçaient une foule considérable. Mais l’histoire du circuit Paul Ricard ne saurait être complète sans un chapitre consacré aux essais privés ; un aspect intimiste et méconnu qui fourmille d’anecdotes parfois dramatiques et souvent amusantes à lire ‘’avé l’assent’’. Dans cet ouvrage, François Chevalier, retrace chronologiquement l’histoire d’une aventure humaine, le nom de Paul Ricard, industriel marseillais autoditacte, méprisant pour tous les politiciens, étant indissociable du circuit qu’il a bâti sur des terrains rocailleux où l’on ne rencontrait auparavant que des troupeaux de chèvres. Le circuit Paul Ricard, c’était le Bol d’Or, le Grand-Prix Camions, les courses d’endurance, de Tourisme, le Marathon Shell et surtout les Grands-Prix de Formule 1. La plupart des illustrations proviennent des archives Ricard et de Michel MORELLI.
