Outre les bolides rouges portant sur les pistes, comme sur les routes du monde entier, son nom et l’insigne au cheval cabré, un certain nombre

d’automobiles a bénéficié des attentions d’Enzo Ferrari. C’est l’histoire que raconte Jean-Pierre Gabriel dans cet ouvrage. Celle-ci a commencé

environ dix ans après que la première Ferrari soit apparue en public. Ce fut d’abord un essai de diversification, ponctué par trois expériences

successives, avec la construction de la 854 Ferrarina, de la “Mille” et de l’Innocenti 186 GT, entre 1959 et 1964. Ces tentatives éphémères ne

connurent de suite positive qu’en 1966, avec la commercialisation, par Fiat, des coupés et cabriolets baptisés “Dino” en raison de leur moteur à

6 cylindres en V de 2 litres dérivé du V6 de compétition dessiné en 1956 par Alfredo Ferrari, le fils prématurément disparu d’Enzo Ferrari.

Parallèlement, Sergio Pininfarina parvint, non sans difficulté, à convaincre Ferrari de créer, autour du V6 Dino, une première voiture de grand

tourisme biplace à moteur central, la Dino 206 GT. Celle-ci fut remplacée en 1969 par la Dino 246 GT, équipée du même type de moteur porté

à 2,4 litres de cylindrée, que Lancia utilisa à son tour pour propulser sa prodigieuse Stratos, trois fois championne du monde des rallyes en

1974, 1975 et 1976.

En 1973, le V6 Dino céda sa place à un V8 de 3 litres qui équipa d’abord le coupé 2+2 places 308 GT4, né Dino. Celui-ci acheva sa carrière sous

la marque Ferrari, avant d’être remplacé par la Mondial 8, en 1980.

Succédant à la Dino 246 GT, la berlinette Ferrari 308 GTB, qui se fit attendre dix-huit mois, connut un vaste succès commercial comme, par la

suite, les 328 GTB et GTS, qui relevaient du même concept. La Ferrari 288 GTO, puis la F40 lancée en 1987 à l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de

la marque, font partie de cette lignée qu’elles clôturèrent avec panache.

Tous les acteurs et témoins vivants ou disparus de cette passionnante histoire sont présentés dans cet ouvrage. L’auteur détaille, un à un, les

différents modèles de voitures concernés. En particulier les prototypes d’études, qui ont finalement décidé Enzo Ferrari à lancer la marque

d’automobiles Dino. Abondamment illustrée de photos et de documents, pour beaucoup inédits, cette vaste fresque se lit comme un roman.



Le présent ouvrage n’est pas une réédition de « Dino, les autres Ferrari » qui fut publié en français, italien et allemand en juin 1988, quelques

semaines seulement avant la disparition d’Enzo Ferrari. Il ne s’agit pas, non plus, d’un condensé des différents livres signés du même auteur,

traitant l’histoire des modèles de voitures de sport et de grand tourisme animés par les moteurs à 6 et 8 cylindres Dino, construits par Ferrari,

Fiat et Lancia, entre 1965 et 1988. « Dino GT, l’inoubliable Ferrari » est une publication entièrement nouvelle, abondamment illustrée de

photos et de documents (dessins de style, plans technique) pour beaucoup inédits, dédiée aux Dino 206 et 246 GT/GTS, Fiat Dino spider et

coupé 2000 et 2400, Lancia Stratos, Dino GT4 et Ferrari 308, 328, 288 GTO, Mondial et F40. Au cours des vingt années qui viennent de

s’écouler, Jean-Pierre Gabriel s’est employé à retrouver les acteurs d’une histoire passionnante. Il a collecté les déclarations, témoignages et

confidences des carrossiers, stylistes et ingénieurs, qui ont pris une part active dans l’élaboration des voitures à moteur Dino. Son ouvrage,

vaste fresque qui se veut être un hommage adressé à leur travail, se lit comme un roman.



Jean-Pierre Gabriel s’est passionné très tôt pour l’histoire des voitures de sport et de compétition d’origine italienne, plus

précisément pour celles qui furent construites par Enzo Ferrari. Son premier livre consacré aux automobiles équipées des

moteurs à 6 et 8 cylindres Dino fut publié en 1984. Il n’a cessé, depuis, d’approfondir ses connaissances, d’accumuler la

documentation et d’écrire sur le sujet.

Le présent ouvrage est le septième signé de sa main. C’est, assurément, l’étude la plus complète jamais réalisée traitant l’histoire

des Dino, Fiat Dino, Lancia Stratos et des Ferrari à moteur V8, produites entre 1965 et 1988.

Description

The origin and subsequent history of the 3-litre Ferrari sports cars, which the famed Italian firm designed and built to contest the various versions of the World Sports Car Championship between 1969 and 1973. This series of cars started with the V12 engine and progressed to using the Flat 12 Ferrari engine from the then current Grand Prix car. Includes the developmental and race history, with a full list of all events and individual chassis numbers.
Synopsis

The late 1960s and early 1970s formed a significant epoch in the world of international sports car racing. As the motor racing rule-making body moved back and forth between cars that less and less resembled road-going vehicles, prototype sports car racing captured the imagination of manufacturers, teams and fans alike. Porsche vs Ferrari vs Alfa Romeo vs Matra provided some of the best ever racing for sports cars. At first the 5-litre Porsches and Ferraris battled through 1970 and 1971, but the 3-litre prototypes that previously had run in another class rapidly became more and more competitive.
By 1973, the Ferrari 312PB, little more than a Grand Prix car with full bodywork, was dominating the scene. This has always been viewed as one of the great eras in sports car racing, when all the Grand Prix drivers were fully active in sports cars as well as F1 machines. With 100 contemporary pictures, this is the story of a great time in motor sport history.

The 100 black-and-white and color photos assembled here vividly depict an era of great change and growing challenges to Ferrari in Formula 1. After scoring two championships in 1952 and 1953, Ferrari faced formidable competition from Mercedes-Benz in 1954, followed by a host of new British teams in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Along with his skill as a photographer and enthusiasm for racing, Alexander’s close relationships to many members of the extended Ferrari family gave him a unique perspective on the team, the cars and especially the drivers. His pictures don’t just capture racing highlights at classic venues like Monaco, Monza, and the Nürburgring—they also offer a more intimate, behind-the-scenes view of the Ferrari team at its headquarters and testing ground in Modena. In these pictures we find Enzo Ferrari himself conferring with drivers and engineers as he supervises winter tests of his latest, still-unpainted GP cars. We also get a rare glimpse of the managers, mechanics and engineers as they debrief drivers and make adjustments and repairs.

To understand the appeal of the book you must understand that there is a large audience out there who will gobble up anything to do with Ferrari. In this instance it is Ferrari in the earlier years and as Maurice Louche owns a number of photographic collections taken by professional photographers, particularly in his native France, he has plenty of Ferrari pictures we have never seen before. He has also enlisted one of the best guides through Ferrari folklore in Jean Sage, the former team manager of Renault in Formula 1 and later a historical consultant to Ferrari. This means that the captions are written in French and English and for the real Ferrari enthusiast Sage has incorporated all the chassis numbers of the racing cars. There are around 1000 photographs in this tome that tips the scales at over a kilo and Maurice Louche for some time now has published his own books so that he has a free hand to pick and choose his photographs. He has done well with this book and it is the kind of book you will keep dipping into regularly.
