Description

Designed by Ferrari’s Mauro Rioli, with British race car designer Tony Southgate, the Ferrari 333 SP contested a variety of sports car championships, both in America and Europe, from the IMSA World Sports Car Championship, to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Synopsis

This book details the origin and racing history of the Ferrari 333 SP. Uniquely, none of the 333 SP models were entered into races by Ferrari itself. The cars were built specifically for customer use; a purchase price of $900,000 included two spare engines and race technical support supplied by Ferrari engineers. A total of 40 cars were built; the first four by Ferrari, the remainder manufactured by Dallara & Michellotto using Ferrari engines. All of the cars were sold to, and race entries made by, privateer teams.
From 1994, the cars contested the IMSA World Sports Car Championship, the United States Road Racing Championship, and the American Le Mans Series, at circuits throughout North America. In 1997, the cars also featured in the Europe-based International Sports Racing Series, as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Two years later, the Doran-Lista team installed a Judd V10 engine into its 333 SP, with the aim of increasing power and improving fuel efficiency.
In all, from the 126 races entered, 47 victories were claimed by the 333 SP.
Additional Information

Covering the period 1993-2003, this book relates to the history and outstanding achievements of the Ferrari 333 SP in the hands of privateers.

The subject matter about the prototype car is unique because of the way in which the car was used.

Includes the technical specification of the car, on-going developments to update the car and the event results achieved with this model.

Description

The origin and subsequent history of the 3-litre Ferrari sports cars, which the famed Italian firm designed and built to contest the various versions of the World Sports Car Championship between 1969 and 1973. This series of cars started with the V12 engine and progressed to using the Flat 12 Ferrari engine from the then current Grand Prix car. Includes the developmental and race history, with a full list of all events and individual chassis numbers.
Synopsis

The late 1960s and early 1970s formed a significant epoch in the world of international sports car racing. As the motor racing rule-making body moved back and forth between cars that less and less resembled road-going vehicles, prototype sports car racing captured the imagination of manufacturers, teams and fans alike. Porsche vs Ferrari vs Alfa Romeo vs Matra provided some of the best ever racing for sports cars. At first the 5-litre Porsches and Ferraris battled through 1970 and 1971, but the 3-litre prototypes that previously had run in another class rapidly became more and more competitive.
By 1973, the Ferrari 312PB, little more than a Grand Prix car with full bodywork, was dominating the scene. This has always been viewed as one of the great eras in sports car racing, when all the Grand Prix drivers were fully active in sports cars as well as F1 machines. With 100 contemporary pictures, this is the story of a great time in motor sport history.

In the next few years he became especially close to Ferrari, developing friendships with some of the team’s most illustrious drivers, particularly fellow Americans such as Dan Gurney, Richie Ginther, and Phil Hill, who won the World Championship driving for Ferrari in 1961.

The 100 black-and-white and color photos assembled here vividly depict an era of great change and growing challenges to Ferrari in Formula 1. After scoring two championships in 1952 and 1953, Ferrari faced formidable competition from Mercedes-Benz in 1954, followed by a host of new British teams in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Along with his skill as a photographer and enthusiasm for racing, Alexander’s close relationships to many members of the extended Ferrari family gave him a unique perspective on the team, the cars and especially the drivers. His pictures don’t just capture racing highlights at classic venues like Monaco, Monza, and the Nürburgring—they also offer a more intimate, behind-the-scenes view of the Ferrari team at its headquarters and testing ground in Modena. In these pictures we find Enzo Ferrari himself conferring with drivers and engineers as he supervises winter tests of his latest, still-unpainted GP cars. We also get a rare glimpse of the managers, mechanics and engineers as they debrief drivers and make adjustments and repairs.

In Ferrari Grand Prix Moments Jesse Alexander delivers a unique perspective on the people, places and events that made the 1950s and 1960s a defining period in the history of the marque that more than any other has come to define Grand Prix racing.

To understand the appeal of the book you must understand that there is a large audience out there who will gobble up anything to do with Ferrari. In this instance it is Ferrari in the earlier years and as Maurice Louche owns a number of photographic collections taken by professional photographers, particularly in his native France, he has plenty of Ferrari pictures we have never seen before. He has also enlisted one of the best guides through Ferrari folklore in Jean Sage, the former team manager of Renault in Formula 1 and later a historical consultant to Ferrari. This means that the captions are written in French and English and for the real Ferrari enthusiast Sage has incorporated all the chassis numbers of the racing cars. There are around 1000 photographs in this tome that tips the scales at over a kilo and Maurice Louche for some time now has published his own books so that he has a free hand to pick and choose his photographs. He has done well with this book and it is the kind of book you will keep dipping into regularly.

In those events he had a remarkable 25 wins and 51 top-3 finishes on race courses as varied as the flat airport track in Palm Springs, California and Germany’s hilly, twisting Nürburgring. In that decade, Hill won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring three times, but also went plummeting off a cliff on Sicily’s tortuous Targa Florio circuit. His first Ferrari drive at Le Mans began in the face of the most tragic accident in the history of motorsport, while his last brought the final win for the automaker’s famous Testa Rossas.

In Ferrari, A Champion’s View, Hill again drives many of the cars in which he competed during his long and honoured career with the great company from Modena. He describes the machines’ technical features, and puts the reader in the cockpit, explaining what the cars were like to drive. Hill also takes the reader to both ends of Ferrari’s sports racing history, from the pre-World War II Auto Avio Costruzioni 815 to the 333 SP of the late 1990s. And America’s champion remembers the great drivers who did not survive in this deadly sport.

The Yearbook opens with an homage to the World Champions: the Scuderia Ferrari so ably represented by drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa, is captured in a series of unique photographs and in detailed reports of every one of the season’s GPs. This is followed by a section devoted to Maranello’s latest arrival, the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, and then a spread on the Ferrari Relay Tour staged to celebrate 60th years of the Prancing Horse. The Ferrari Yearbook 2007 also covers other subjects dear to us here in Maranello, including the Corse Clienti division, the Galleria Ferrari museum, the Ferrari Stores and the Ferrari Clubs. The Yearbook is dedicated to everyone who loves Ferrari and wants to be able to relive the high points of what proved to be an incredibly exciting year on every level.
