Description

A limited edition of 1500 copies. In 1966, Colin Chapman persuaded Ford to underwrite development of a V8 for the new 3000cc Grand Prix formula. Built by Cosworth, the new DFV engine won Lotus four World Championship Grands Prix in 1967. A year later, and now available to other constructors, the engine began its domination of Grand Prix racing.
Synopsis

This book is based on a concept placed with Veloce by Anthony Pritchard shortly before his death in 2013. Graham Robson has written a detailed and superbly illustrated account of the Formula 1 cars powered by the Ford DFV V8 engine. This all-conquering power unit was the result of discussions between Colin Chapman, boss of the Lotus car company, and the UK Ford Motor Company. Design, development and manufacture was entrusted to the Cosworth company in Northampton, in response to Lotus' desperate need for an engine for the 3000cc Formula 1 regulations that came into force for 1966. Lotus had exclusive use of the DFV in 1967, its first season, when Jim Clark drove the DFV-powered Lotus 49 to four World Championship victories.
Becoming available to other Formula 1 teams in 1968, adopters included McLaren and Matra. Graham Hill won the Drivers' Championship with DFV-powered Lotus cars in 1968, and drivers of DFV-powered cars won the Championship in 13 out of 16 years. Year by year, the power of the DFV engine increased; new companies were set up to overhaul the DFV; and engines prepared by these companies were more powerful than those emanating from the factory.
Robson's narrative starts with a look at Ford's strategy of entering F1, a description of the design and development of this engine, and details the successes – and failures – of every Formula 1 car powered by the DFV engine. During these years the only manufacturer to successfully challenge DFV power was Ferrari, with drivers Lauda and Scheckter winning the Drivers' Championship on three occasions. Because the DFV later gave rise to successful derivatives, such as the turbocharged DFX, and the DFY, DFZ and DFR evolutions, these are also analysed.
This important book is illustrated with more than 300 photographs, most of which come from the UK Ford Motor Company’s own archives.

Description

Probably for the first time, criticism is leveled at both Louis Stanley, and the introduction of the H16 engine as contributory factors to the failure of British Racing Motors. Louis Stanley for his freeloading extravagance, and the rather foolish decision by the management to specify such a complicated and bulky power unit.
Synopsis

This is the story as told by a man who was both a devoted fan and a loyal team member of British Racing Motors. Who saw and was involved in the repeated failures and humiliating times of the 1950’s, through the gradual progress of winning minor races to Jo Bonnier winning the first World Championship Grand Prix in Holland in 1959. Culminating in the ultimate honour in 1962, when, in East London, South Africa, Graham Hill drove the BRM to victory to win both the drivers World Championship and the Constructors Championship for the BRM team. Thereby making a considerable contribution to British motor racing history.

Review by Patrick Quinn for Australian Classic Car, July 2007

BOOK OF THE MONTH

There have been a number of publications on British Racing Motors over the years but I can't recall any written from a mechanic's perspective. Dick Salmon started with BRM for the 1952 season when the English racing car manufacturer was having a less than successful time with the V16 Mark 1. This isn't a car by car, race by race description of BRM's history, although there are certainly descriptions of the cars and races. It is more on what it was like to be a mechanic, what they did to get the cars ready, how they travelled from race to race, even to where they stopped for lunch on their journeys across Europe. The frustration at BRM's lack of success comes across palpably but so does the elation when, during the rear engine era, Graham Hill joined the team and quickly bought success.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly, especially Salmon's conversational style, which makes it a delight to read. What also places it heads above the rest is the selection of photos. Not surprisingly, the photos are not necessarily what you would have seen in the press of the time but would more likely have been found in the personal photo albums of people involved. I particularly like the photo taken inside an aircraft en route to Casablanca, showing the cars stowed on one side of the cabin with passengers on the other.

A top choice for historians and certainly our book of the month.

Review from MotorSport, May 2007
UK magazine

At atmospheric account of BRM at the factory and on the road, from mechanic Salmon's first trip abroad testing the V16s at Monza in 1952, through descriptions of Alfred Owen's displeasure at the many BRM failures to Jo Bonnier's breakthrough win in the 1959 Dutch GP and Graham Hill clinching the 1962 world title. All this is set delightfully in context by tales of travel and, of course, celebration parties.

It's illustrated with copious contemporary photographs of races and informal snaps, sprinkled with passes, programme covers and hotel flyers.

Review by Mike Goodbun for Classic Cars, May 2007
UK magazine

Mechanic, Dick Salmon, worked at BRM from 1951 to '67 so he's perfectly placed to shed fresh light on what it was really like to work for Raymond Mays' Lincolnshire-based race team. His tale includes hilarious anecdotes of transport mishaps and border crossings, the elation of BRM's highs and the misery of its lows.

Photography is mostly black-and-white, but also includes intimate colour scene-capturing by Anthony Carter (Motor Racing – Reflections of a Lost Era). All 224 pages are refreshingly simply laid-out.

It's an essential purchase for BRM fans, but you don't have to know about BRM to enjoy it.

Review from Hot4s.com.au (Australia), May 2007

It's quite a special book for those in the know. You see, it details the rise and subsequent fall of the great British Racing Motors, which was something of an emotional roller-coaster for Pommie pride throughout the '50s and '60s. The sheer research that must have gone into this thing, not to mention trying to pull aIl these photos from archives and what have you, must have been absolutely astronomical, and if you're a fan of British motor-racing history, you'll no doubt turn every page with either a tear in your eye or a hand on your heart.

Review from Classic & Sports Car, April 2007

GP mechanic Salmon provides a fresh insight into life at BRM in this autobiography, written with Anthony Carter. From childhood in rural Lincolnshire to BRM's glory year in 1962 – when Graham Hill and the team won Fl's driver's and constructor's championships – Salmon covers it all.

There's also a wealth of superb photos. First-hand histories of motor sport in the '50s are rare, and this story is a joy. Highly recommended.

Review from New Zealand Classic Car, Spring 2007

The story of BRM is pretty well known but this book gives so many new angles on it. No matter how much you think you know about this period of racing, you’ll find out new stuff, and have a smile on your face much of the time.

It’s a decent sized book, with 220 large pages. There’s also a really first class selection of photos, many of which are all the better for being for being candid, behind the scenes pics, often taken on the road and in the workshop or the pits.

One of the best motor sport books I’ve read for ages: very highly recommended.

Review from Startline magazine, February 2007

This is the real BRM story as told by a man who was both a devoted fan and loyal team member of the British Racing Motors Team. Packed with previously unpublished photographs and racing memorabilia, the book traces the team's continental travel and explores the comradeship which existed between the team members.

Review by Stuart Davey for British Racing Mechanics Club, February 2007

It is a book that I found fascinating in the detail of the Graham Hill championship year of 1962 and subsequently with many photographs which have never been published before covering the years as it does from the V16 to the advent of the P261 monocoque cars along with the arrival of JYS. The tale is bought to a close with Dick being made redundant at BRM and moving to Lotus and finally ends at Goodwood, very apt.

In conclusion, I heartily recommend it and its well worth the cover price for the photographs alone.

Description

The story of a Grand Prix formula largely overlooked due to the perception that the cars were underpowered and hence unspectacular. This perception ignores the significant technical developments that took place, the domination achieved by British race-car constructors and the rise of British drivers Jim Clark, Graham Hill and John Surtees.
Synopsis

This is the story of a Grand Prix formula that no British constructor wanted but became one that they would almost totally dominate. It has remained largely overlooked due to the perception that the cars were underpowered and hence unspectacular. Such a perception ignores the significant technical developments that took place that are now taken for granted, such as monocoque chassis construction. It saw the career of Stirling Moss came to a premature end but in his absence the rise to prominence of a new breed of British drivers in Jim Clark, Graham Hill and John Surtees.
The book paints a complete picture of the 1½-litre F1, the 21 marques and 101 drivers that took part in one or more of the 46 GPs between 1961 and 1965. Many of the marques and the majority of the drivers made little or no impact, yet their contributions deserve to be remembered.

The tragic deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna led to immense change with new emphasis on safety, including measures to slow down the cars and improve their structural strength, and numerous changes to circuits. In many ways Formula 1 became more as we recognise it today, especially as the decade’s dominant teams, McLaren and Williams, remain familiar. Besides the winning cars, there is always much fascination for fans in unsuccessful and obscure efforts, such as Andrea Moda and Venturi, and this authoritative and comprehensively illustrated book covers them all.

The series launches with the 1960s, when the British came to predominate after the rule of Italian and German manufacturers in the previous decade. All ten World Champions of the decade came from the English-speaking world – Britain, the USA, Australia and New Zealand – and most of the successful cars were British-built too, from Cooper, BRM, Lotus and Brabham. This was an era when small teams and privateers were involved in significant numbers and they are all covered, all the way to the most obscure and unsuccessful. This book shines new light on many areas of the sport and will be treasured by all Formula 1 enthusiasts.

Year-by-year treatment covers each season in fascinating depth, running through the teams – and their various cars – in order of importance.
Works teams form the core of the book: BRM, Ferrari and Lotus participated throughout the decade, while Cooper, Porsche, Honda, Brabham, Eagle, McLaren and Matra were the other winning marques.
Privateer teams in all their colourful diversity are a special dimension of this book, topped by Rob Walker Racing, the finest privateer operation in Formula 1 history, and a winner in this decade with Stirling Moss and Jo Siffert.
Privateers range from well-known names to one-race wonders long forgotten by even the most dedicated enthusiasts.
Over 600 photos – in colour wherever possible – show every type of car raced by every team, presenting a comprehensive survey of all participants.
The sweep of the decade covers rapid technical development, including monocoque chassis, ever-wider tyres and aerodynamic wings.
Detailed text includes car specifications and technical essentials.

When the World Championship was first held in 1950, red Italian cars predominated, from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati, and continued to do so for much of the period. But by the time the decade closed, green British cars were in their ascendancy, first Vanwall and then rear-engined Cooper playing the starring roles, and BRM and Lotus having walk-on parts. As for drivers, one stood out above the others, Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio becoming World Champion five times. Much of the fascination of this era also lies in its numerous privateers and also-rans, all of which receive their due coverage in this completist work.

Year-by-year treatment covers each season in fascinating depth, running through the teams — and their various cars — in order of importance.
Alfa Romeo: these supercharged 1½-litre cars dominated the first two years, with titles won by Farina (1950) and Fangio (1951).
Ferrari: this new marque steamrollered the opposition in two seasons run to Formula 2 rules (1952–53), Ascari becoming champion both times, and took two more crowns with Fangio (1956) and Hawthorn (1958).
Maserati: the fabulous 250F, the decade’s most significant racing car, propelled Fangio to two more of his five championships (1954 and 1957).
Mercedes-Benz: the German manufacturer stepped briefly into Formula 1 (1954–55) and won almost everything with Fangio and up-and-coming Moss.
Vanwall: green finally beat red when the Vanwalls, driven by Moss and Brooks, won the inaugural constructors’ title (1958).
Cooper: the rear-engine pioneers signposted Formula 1’s future when Jack Brabham became World Champion (1959).
Over 600 photos from the superb archives of Motorsport Images show every type of car raced by every team and driver, presenting a comprehensive survey of all participants.
