Ford Motor Company began building cars with computer-based fuel-control systems in the late 1970s. In 1980, Ford introduced the Electronic Engine Control (EEC) III system, followed by the EEC IV system in 1984. This fuel-injection system featured onboard self-diagnostics and it ushered in a new era in engine control.
