Finally, the world no.1 car manufacturer broke the spell and emerged on top. Toyota honoured its rank and scored its first victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours on its 20th attempt as a works team clinching a double into the bargain! The win went to Sébastien Buemi from Switzerland and Kazuki Nakajima from Japan, who had just missed out on victory two years earlier, backed up by double F1 world champion, Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard, who was the star of this year’s race, added another jewel to the Triple Crown (victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Indy 500 and the Formula 1 World Championship title) that is the stuff of dreams. But the three drivers had to really push as their teammates never gave them an inch. Completing the podium was Rebellion Racing and its star from the Vendée Thomas Laurent who had hit the headlines a year earlier by finishing second overall and first in LM P2. This year the no. 26 Oreca 07 dominated this category before being disqualified in post-race scrutineering gifting victory to the Signatech Matmut team and Nicolas Lapierre-André Negrao-Pierre Thiriet.
Back in the GTE Pro category after a 7-year hiatus BMW was unable to prevent the Porsche 911 RSR “Pink Pig” from winning the category thanks to Kevin Estre, Michael Christensen and Laurens Vanthoor. The Zuffenhausen firm also scooped the pool in GTE Am with the Proton Racing team co-owned by Patrick Dempsey with a little help from an 18-year-old French rookie called Julien Andlauer (remember this name). With Rafael Nadal as starter and Jacky Ickx as Grand Marshal the latest staging of the greatest endurance race in the world was full of interest. De notoriété mondiale, la course des 24 Heures du Mans attire des concurrents venus de France bien sûr, mais aussi de toute l'Europe, des Etats-Unis, du Japon, du Venezuela, de Chine, du Brésil... C'est pour cette raison que l'épreuve est la pierre angulaire du nouveau championnat du monde d'endurance FIA.

Depuis 1978, l'annuel des 24 Heures du Mans se propose de faire revivre par le texte et l'image la course mais aussi ses préparatifs et la fièvre qui s'empare de la préfecture de la Sarthe tout au long de la semaine précédant le départ. Chaque voiture et leurs pilotes y sont présentés. Cet annuel officiel est un livre incontournable pour qui veut garder une trace d'un des plus grands événements sportifs annuels actuels.

La 90e édition des 24 Heures du Mans a été en premier lieu marquée par le retour en masse des spectateurs après deux années de restriction ! Un public remercié comme il se doit pour sa patience par une épreuve riche en spectacle avec notamment un duel intense entre les Toyota GR010 Hybrid. Après la n° 7 en 2021, c’est à la n° 8 qu’est revenu l’honneur d’offrir au constructeur japonais une cinquième victoire en terre sarthoise. Ryo Hirakawa décroche son succès dès sa première apparition dans la catégorie reine alors que c’est le troisième de Brendon Hartley mais surtout le quatrième de Sébastien Buemi, désormais l’égal des grands Henri Pescarolo, Olivier Gendebien et autres Yannick Dalmas. L’autre exploit, cette année, est à mettre au crédit de Jim Glickenhaus. Quatrième l’an passé pour sa première sortie sur la classique mancelle, le fantasque américain s’est offert ce podium dont il rêve depuis toujours. Saluons en LMP2 l’extraordinaire prestation de Jota, qui place deux voitures sur le podium dans une catégorie mono- type ô combien concurrentielle. La Porsche 911 RSR-19 officielle de Frédéric Makowiecki-Richard Lietz-Gianmaria Bruni restera dans les livres comme la dernière lauréate d’une catégorie GTE Pro tant adulée par les fans mais dont c’était la dernière sortie aux 24 Heures du Mans. Quant à l’Aston Martin TF Sport, elle a dû se défaire de Porsche bien coriaces pour s’en aller triompher en GTE Am. The works Porsche 911 RSR-19 driven by frédéric Makowiecki-Richard Lietz-Gianmaria Bruni will go down in the history books as the last winner of the GTE Pro category much adored by the fans, but which was having its swansong in the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans. And the TF Sport Aston Martin managed to overcome a tenacious challenge from porsche to win the GTE Am category.
