Mit ihm kehrte der älteste Automobilhersteller der Welt 1952 glanzvoll auf die Rennstrecken zurück: Fünf Starts – vier Siege, ein zweiter Rang. Seine Eleganz, die sich weit nach oben öffnenden Flügeltüren, der aggressive Klang des Sechszylinders und seine grandiose Rennhistorie weckten Begehrlichkeiten. Kein Wunder, dass der 300 SL – weiter perfektioniert und mit dem ersten in größeren Stückzahlen gebauten Benzineinspritzmotor geadelt – zuerst als Coupé und später als Roadster, zu einem Statussymbol der 50er- und 60er- Jahre mutierte.

Sein erster Auftritt auf dem New Yorker Autosalon geriet im April 1954 zur Sensation – und seitdem begeistert dieses zur rollenden Skulptur gewordene Stück Technik jeden Autoliebhaber. Ganze 1400 Coupés (plus 1858 Roadster) entstanden zwischen 1954 und 1957 (der Roadster wurde zwischen 1957 und 1964 gebaut) – ästhetische und technische Kunstwerke, die bis heute von der Kreativität und Phantasie ihrer Schöpfer erzählen.

Zum 50. Geburtstag dieser Legende haben Markus Bolsinger (Foto) und Jürgen Lewandowski (Text) dem 300 SL ein faszinierendes Buch mit opulenten Fotos gewidmet, das diese geniale Konstruktion und seine unglaubliche Geschichte würdigt.
