It was originally designed to meet a 1940 US Army specification, and over 600,000 examples were built in both Ford and Willys forms. At first it was a rather crude machine but as time and success came, gradually more features were added and it was modernized mechanically without detracting from its universal all-round appeal. Performance with the Jeep was judged on totally different criteria than normal - how fast it accelerated or how fast it could go was never important to its owners, it was more about how it could traverse virtually impassable terrain, climb mountains, cross rivers or deserts without mishap. It was not long before the Jeep became the standard by which other off-road vehicles were judged. Despite ever-increasing competition from around the world the Jeep is still the most recognized name in the business.

Malgré son association très fréquente avec la société Willys-Overland américaine, la Jeep fut en réalité étudiée par une équipe travaillant pour le compte d'American Bantam, en réponse à une demande de l'US Quartermaster Corps formulée en 1940. 
Face aux manigances d'une très forte opposition de nature politique, Bantam perdit le marché en faveur de Willys-Overland et de Ford qui finirent par produire environ 640 000 exemplaires de ce qui reste probablement le véhicule le plus célèbre du monde, tandis que Hotchkiss produisit en France, bien après la guerre, 28 000 Jeep supplémentaires. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Jeep servit toutes les armées alliées. 
Des Jeep en partie submersibles débarquèrent le Jour J en France, en Belgique, aux Pays-Bas et en Allemagne. Dans les conditions extrêmes du front russe, elles révélèrent leur efficacité et s'attirèrent l'admiration de l'armée Rouge. Après la fin de la guerre, des milliers de Jeep furent allouées aux armées des pays européens récemment libérés. D'autres furent "civilisées", et avec le temps ces véhicules commencèrent à passer aux mains des collectionneurs. 
Dans les années 1970, des Jeep restaurées apparurent souvent dans de grands films, et Hollywood contribua à souligner l'importance du rôle historique de la Jeep dans la victoire des Alliés.
