If a 911 SC is your classic of choice, you wont find a more detailed book available anywhere, with everything you need to know in terms of history, maintenance, repairs and specification provided here in superb detail. Highly specialised, yes; but extraordinarily useful for any SC-owning enthusiast.

Each book describes the 911SC and 993 models in great detail and chronicles the changes made by Porsche each year of that models development. Mr. Streather covers the engine, transmission, and suspension with basic maintenance tips and performance modifications. This is done with text and plenty of photos perfect for the shadetree mechanic. A few of the basic maintenance topics covered include: oil and filter changes, brake bleeding, air conditioning check and tire maintenance in addition to cleaning and storage tips.
Also included are details of the body describing changes and options available.
Someone considering the purchase of either of these models will find the Buyers Guide section invaluable. In this section the author describes how to check the authenticity of a car by explaining the VIN number and option code marking. He also points out potential problem areas to examine during a pre-purchase inspection. The 993 edition also includes OBDI and OBDII fault codes.
The 911SC version contains over 430 pages with 1180 photos and the 993 edition has 640 pages with 1300 photos. I understand that these are volume 2 and 3 of a planned series of 6. Volume #1 is dedicated to the 964. Personally I hope volume 4, 5 or 6 focuses on the Carrera of 1984-1988 vintage, as Id really like to have all this information for my car.

There is certainly a considerable amount of bibliography on the air cooled 911, such as the ones by Peter Morgan or Wayne Dempsey. Additionally, there is a plethora of excellent articles that have been posted on periodicals over the years. However, finding one source of information, specific to the 911SC, which goes beyond what the owner's manual covers can be a challenge. The "911SC service manual" by Bentley is a great resource for a Porsche home mechanic, but it does not offer a higher-level view of the car for those not interested in turning wrenches. I am happy to report that Mr. Streather's book fills in this gap rather nicely.
First and foremost, this is a book aimed at the SC enthusiast. Beyond obligatory information such as explaining the need for a pop-off valve in the air-box, the book gets high marks for the detailed buyer's guide, the listings of information specific to each model year and also the special editions such as the Martini. The charts regarding the exterior and interior colors codes along with the option package codes also need to be mentioned. Granted, pieces of this information might be found on the World Wide Web, but having it all bundled in one volume is truly handy (besides, no WWW site covers the ventilation system with such detail as this book does). Additionally, having owned a Euro-spec car, the chart translating German terms into Eglish is a very welcome resource, given the abundance of German words in the various plaques and stickers throughout the car.
The book also covers other trivia that an SC enthusiast may want to know, such as the racing legacy of the car and its enduring presence in vintage races and track days. Finally, though not exhaustive, information on modifications on the car abounds.
This being a first edition, one may occasionally find a typographical error, awkward use of the language (I am not referring to British vs American English) or a mislabeled picture. These should not deter a potential owner of this book though. If one wanted a resource focusing exclusively on modifications, a volume by W. Dempsey or Bruce Anderson would be more appropriate. However, as an all-around resource, the "911SC Essential Companion" hits its mark well. I expect many SC owners and enthusiasts to find the book a great addition to their library.
