Spécialisée dans l’aéronautique, la « Svenska Aeoplan Aktiebolaget» voit le jour en 1937. Le gouvernement suédois d’alors craint l’éminence d’un conflit mondial dont il veut se prémunir, en dotant son armée d’une aviation digne de ce nom. Mais au sortir de la guerre, l’entreprise peine à se développer, les commandes de l’état suédois cessant brutalement. Les dirigeants de la Saab décident donc de se tourner vers l’automobile, épaulant ainsi Volvo, l’unique constructeur national.



C’est le début d’une extraordinaire saga dont seuls les Scandinaves ont le secret. Les insolites 92, 93 et 96 séduisent une clientèle éprise d’originalité technique. Les Saab s’imposent rapidement sur le marché intérieur, et conquièrent le cœur des automobilistes américains, leur principal débouché à l’exportation. Elles s’illustrent également en compétition, triomphant de redoutables sportives bien plus puissantes qu’elles. La petite marque de Trollhättan connaît alors une irrésistible ascension, proposant des modèles de plus en plus performants, à l’image des Sonett, des 99 et de la légendaire 900 Turbo. Malgré le rachat de la firme par GM, et quelques difficultés financières récentes, l’image toujours très forte de Saab est demeurée intacte dans le cœur des passionnés.
