Et les foules vont se passionner pour ce nouveau spectacle où des voitures de série sérieusement renforcées de poutrelles d'acier, dépouillées de leurs enjoliveurs de roues, les phares et feux cachés par du ruban adhésif, s'affrontent dans le fracas de la tôle froissée. Certaines ont, pour toute préparation, le nom ou le surnom du pilote et, bien sûr, un énorme numéro de course sur les portières. Ces autos ont le droit, le devoir, de se caramboler. Une sorte de pugilat mécanique auquel va se livrer toute une génération de pilotes de l'après-guerre. Presque un phénomène de société. Au-delà du résultat sportif, c'est le spectacle qui impressionne et intéresse le public. Pas étonnant alors que le plus fameux des imprésarios de boxe soit à l'origine de cette nouvelle discipline. Les circuits deviennent des arènes où des hommes se livrent à de rudes combats, à Buffalo, à Montreuil et partout ailleurs en France. Mais toujours avec du cur et du panache ! Parmi eux, un jeune homme de moins de vingt ans va se passionner à son tour pour le stock-car. Guy Curval, mécanicien de Suresnes, rêve de compétition, de gloire et d'aventure. Tout cela, il va le rencontrer, le toucher au travers de cette compétition dans laquelle il "tombe" dès les débuts du phénomène et à laquelle il va consacrer sa vie.
