Last year everything Valentino Rossi touched turned to gold, this year it was never going to be that easy. Competition was fierce with Max Biaggi, Sete Gibernau and Loris Capirossi all determined to claim the title from the brilliant young Italian. Rossi got the better start with a win in Suzuka but Gibernau was quick to respond with a win in Round 2 at Welkom. Rounds 7 and 8 saw Rossi drop to 3rd position opening the doors for Biaggi, Capirossi and Gibernau to claw back some points from the fading Italian. With the press on his back, Rossi needed to display the magic that seemed so effortless in 2002, which he duly did.
