Small cars have been a feature of Italian life since the 1920s. Three-quarters of the country is mountainous, so roads are windy and narrow, while densely packed city streets also require tiny and manoeuvrable cars. Products of necessity and austerity, Fiat's small cars have acquired a cult following throughout the world. The charismatic 500 and 600 are particularly popular, and while this book looks at these cars and their many derivatives, thay are also set in context with the 1930s Topolino, and Fiat's more recent interpretations of the classic theme, the 126, Cinquecento and Seicento, being interpreted in detail.
