Gegründet 1926, begann Ducati erst in den 50ern mit der Produktion von Motorrad-Motoren; 1955 hatte der italienische Hersteller unter technischer Leitung von Fabio Taglioni seine sportliche Linie gefunden. Die sportlichen Ducati-Einzylinder wuchsen von 125 in verschiedenen Stufen bis auf 450 Kubik Hubraum, zumeist mit Königswellenantrieb. Mit Beginn der 70er Jahre präsentierte Ducati den ersten V-Zweizylinder, der als GT 750 in Produktion ging. Die daraus entwickelten Rennmaschinen unterstrichen das Image der Marke, die 750 SS mit desmodromischer Ventilsteuerung war eine Replika der erfolgreichen Werksrennmaschinen, die 1972 bei den 200 Meilen von Imola triumphierten. Aus der 750 SS wurde die 900 SS, Ducati hatte seinen Weg gefunden: Der Name steht heute für das Sportmotorrad schlechthin und gehört zu den Motorradmarken mit den größten Zuwachsraten.
