This book explains how the bicycle developed from its beginnings as the hobby-horse of 1817 to the pneumatic-tyred safety bicycle of 1892. By that date, apart from gearing systems, the modern bicycle may be considered to have emerged, a model of engineering economy. This Album shoes the direct influence upon bicyclists. The author explains hoy and why the penny farthing came about and gives information on mussums holding bicycle collections, and veteran cycle clubs.
The aurhor is a self-employed engineer and his interest in veteran cycles eas fired in 1980 when invited at short notice to participate in a 50 mile penny-farthing race. Having discovered the delights of the Ordinary, he took part in a coast to coast ride across England in 1983 and the following year an end to end, from Land´s End to John o Groats in under twelve days. He edits the Veteran Cycle Club magazine The Boneshaker and is researching information on English velocipede makers of the period 1868-72.
