Performance with the Jeep was judged on totally different criteria than normal - how fast it accelerated or how fast it could go was never important to its owners, it was more about how it could traverse virtually impassable terrain, climb mountains, cross rivers or deserts without mishap. It was not long before the Jeep became the standard by which other off-road vehicles were judged. Despite ever-increasing competition from around the world the Jeep is still the most recognized name in the business.

Malgré son association très fréquente avec la société Willys-Overland américaine, la Jeep fut en réalité étudiée par une équipe travaillant pour le compte d'American Bantam, en réponse à une demande de l'US Quartermaster Corps formulée en 1940. 
Face aux manigances d'une très forte opposition de nature politique, Bantam perdit le marché en faveur de Willys-Overland et de Ford qui finirent par produire environ 640 000 exemplaires de ce qui reste probablement le véhicule le plus célèbre du monde, tandis que Hotchkiss produisit en France, bien après la guerre, 28 000 Jeep supplémentaires. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Jeep servit toutes les armées alliées. 
Des Jeep en partie submersibles débarquèrent le Jour J en France, en Belgique, aux Pays-Bas et en Allemagne. Dans les conditions extrêmes du front russe, elles révélèrent leur efficacité et s'attirèrent l'admiration de l'armée Rouge. Après la fin de la guerre, des milliers de Jeep furent allouées aux armées des pays européens récemment libérés. D'autres furent "civilisées", et avec le temps ces véhicules commencèrent à passer aux mains des collectionneurs. 
Dans les années 1970, des Jeep restaurées apparurent souvent dans de grands films, et Hollywood contribua à souligner l'importance du rôle historique de la Jeep dans la victoire des Alliés.

                    [sinopsis_editor] => Il generale americano Dwight Eisnhower, divenuto poi Presidente degli Stati Uniti, in più di una occasione, disse che la Jeep era al primo posto tra le armi che avevano consentito la vittoria degli Alleati sulle forze dell’Asse nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale, su tutti i fronti e in tutte le situazioni. La Jeep nacque per soddisfare un preciso requisito di mobilità richiesto dall’Esercito Americano; era un mezzo innovativo per i suoi tempi, che introdusse un nuovo concetto di mobilità in campo militare e fu testimone di sconfitte e vittorie operando a tutte le latitudini e in ogni condizione climatica. Finita la Seconda Guerra Mondiale fu riconvertita ad usi agricoli e industriali assumendo il nome di CJ (Civilian Jeep), fortunato acronimo mantenuto poi per vari decenni e serie. Poco dopo la fine del secondo conflitto, la MB fu lo spunto per creare, in parallelo, una gamma di veicoli multiuso rappresentati da una Station Wagon, un pick up e un furgone commerciale, che garantirono la sopravvivenza della Willys Overland stessa. La Jeep conobbe momenti di crisi industriale, vicissitudini finanziarie e cambi di proprietà iniziati negli anni Ottanta con il passaggio di mano della AMC alla Renault fino alla Daimler Chrysler e quindi ad un fondo di investimenti, per poi arrivare all’ingresso della Chrysler nella Fiat. Il volume ripercorre tutta questa lunga ed articolata storia, fermandosi proprio agli anni Ottanta del Novecento, avvalendosi di una rigorosa ricostruzione storica, di un ricco apparato iconografico, oltre che delle schede tecniche dei principali modelli.
