Soon, though, it was Audi who produced the world’s first rally-winning four-wheel-drive car – the Quattro. However it was Peugeot who designed, developed, campaigned and won with the first truly sophisticated four-wheel-drive Group B Car – the 205 Turbo 16. It was the first truly great, purpose-designed, Group B car. Determined to win at almost any cost, Peugeot hired Jean Todt (who would later transform the fortunes of the Ferrari F1 organisation) in 1981, and set him an ambitious target. His dream car had to be running in 1983, homologated in 1984, and capable of winning World Championships by 1985. Nothing, no excuses and no lack of application, was to get in the way of that. Apart from being obliged to use the silhouette of the still-secret new 205 road car, Todt was able ask for anything. Getting approval for whatever he needed and fast-tracking the engineering of the four-wheel-drive rally was not an issue in reaching one simple objective – victory. This is precisely what was achieved. This book tells the detailed story, and lists all the cars, the influences, and the personalities behind a magnificent success story. No sooner had the new turbocharged, transverse-mid-engined car started competing than it was ready to win, yet its dominant career was cut short at the end of 1986 by an abrupt change in rallying regulations. Not only is the engineering story laid out in great detail, but the interaction between company personalities, super-star drivers (including Ari Vatanen) and the highly-charged atmosphere of motorsport at this time is all analysed. Because Group B was cancelled even before the 205 T16 had reached maturity, it went on to have a successful career in desert ‘Raid’ rallies, and at Pike Peak in the USA, all of which is described in this amazingly authoritative study.Packed with illustrations, technical details, facts, figures and successes of this innovative car this book is a must for any rally fan.

The ‘Peugeot 205 T16’ written by Graham Robson was published this year by Veloce Publishing Ltd as part of a series on 'Rally Giants'.

It is a well written book, liberally and well illustrated with both diagrams and superb photos. He has put the history of the 205 T16 in the context of the time, the new Group B regulations and the contemporary competition.

The book covers the goals, development, problems and achievements of the rally car. A chronological account is included of their World Rally successes in the years 1984-86. Nor is the human side overlooked. There are biographical sketches of the main people involved in the design, the development and the driving.

It is a very readable book, worth adding to your library – and worth looking at other books he has written in the series.

Latest offering in Veloce's Rally Giants series is Graham Robson's effort on the Peugeot 205 T16. The book runs to 130 pages packed with pictures and data on the iconic four-wheel-drive Group B car, and follows similar titles on Quattro, Impreza, Stratos, Austin-Healey and Escort.

This is a soft cover book of some 128 pages with many photos mostly in colour. 

We are talking here of the car with which Peugeot secured the World Championship in 1985 and 1986. The author firstly sets the scene in World Rallying that lead to the development of the 205 T16 by Peugeot under the direction of Jean Todt. An insight into the car's initial construction and further development (evolution) under the new 4-wheel drive Group B regulations is given, along with driver profiles for Vatanen, Salonen and Kankunen, and team boss Jean Todt, now CEO of Ferrari. This is followed by details of the car's competition history, rally by rally, leading up to the two World Championships, and the fight with Audi and Lancia. The telling makes for fascinating reading, well illustrated with those coloured photos, including several taken on the Rally of New Zealand. 

The book makes for an excellent read, and is recommended to all with an interest in Peugeot history. We are reminded how special the 205 T16 really was, as the first ground up purpose built rally car, and how its WRC career was cut short after Group B was banned following several tragic accidents.

I constantly struggle to see the book that I'm looking for in the bookcase. So, I for am delighted to see that the new series of Rally Giants by Graham Robson all have matching grey spines with the name of the featured car clearly marked.

Three have already been released by Veloce Publishing and feature the MkI Escort, Subaru Impreza and the Lancia Stratos.

The books each describe the birth of each 'rally giant' and the author chronicles the development, politics, successes and failures of the cars. The style and format offers an easy read and the ability to dip into each book as and when.

There are plenty of excellent photos (both mono and colour) and sections covering the personalities that shaped the various cars' development as well as the star drivers.

The best news though is that Graham Robson is working on another dozen or so books to include the Austin-Healey 3000 through to the WRC Ford Focus – I can't wait!

It’s three for the price of one this time as I have been reading the Ford Escort Mk1, Subaru Impreza and Lancia Stratos in the Rally Giants series, written by Graham Robson and published by Veloce and thoroughly recommend all three volumes. Priced at £14.99, each has an interesting 8 x 8in format with about 125 pages containing lots of well chosen pictures, mostly in colour, so looks impressive enough for the coffee table, yet due to the author’s experience and attention to getting his facts right, must have a place in the serious enthusiast’s bookshelves, from whence they will frequently be taken as a source of reference.

What I really enjoyed most though is the way in which Graham has made a readable tale from what so easily could have been equally factual but totally boring. The author knew and worked in the rally world with the people and events he describes so brings out their characters and the behind the scenes action not always appreciated at the time.

Followers of rallying will be impressed with the latest new series of books from Veloce Publishing, going under the general moniker of Rally Giants. 

The book is impressively high in quality. Fans of the MkI Escort will buy this book for its plethora of amazing photographs and illustrations – just about a hundred in all, most of them archive shots from the early Seventies and from a variety of sources. Action shots of such rallying legends as Roger Clark piloting various Escorts through some of the world’s most gruelling rallies are enough to make this book a worthwhile buy. But it’s the accompanying text that inevitably provides the biggest insight. 

With Robson’s experience in the world of rallying and his own success at the wheel of numerous competition Escorts over the years, he’s able to provide a truly unique perspective into what was undoubtedly the most successful rally car of its era. From the initial plans of 1967 to replace the legendary Lotus Cortina with a modified version of the forthcoming Escort, to the eventual demise of the MkI Escort and its retirement as an official works car eight years later, this book provides a depth of knowledge that can’t fail to impress. And, as ever, it’s written in an accessible and entertaining style that helps to ensure it’s an easy read.

Of course, the subsequent MkII Escort also went on to be a fantastically successful rally machine for the second half of the Seventies. It can’t be long before Robson adds a MkII title to this promising new series …

This soft cover book has 124 pages and the whole series is authored by the knowledgeable Graham Robson.

Robson tells the full story, putting the cars in the context of the factory’s models that went before and those that came after. And it’s an honest telling, for these cars had faults and problems as well as great successes. Their homologation stories are enjoyable, both involving some imaginative counting as far as quantities and availability were concerned! 

A superb selection of photos adds to the enjoyment of these books - Roger Clark’s prototype twin-cam Escort cetainly looks the part on the ’68 Alpine Rally!

At least 14 more titles are promised:if they are as good as these two (Lancia & Escort), this will be an excellent series for all rally fans.

I constantly struggle to see the book that I'm looking for in the bookcase. So, I for am delighted to see that the new series of Rally Giants by Graham Robson all have matching grey spines with the name of the featured car clearly marked.

Three have already been released by Veloce Publishing and feature the MkI Escort, Subaru Impreza and the Lancia Stratos.

The books each describe the birth of each 'rally giant' and the author chronicles the development, politics, successes and failures of the cars. The style and format offers an easy read and the ability to dip into each book as and when.

There are plenty of excellent photos (both mono and colour) and sections covering the personalities that shaped the various cars' development as well as the star drivers.

The best news though is that Graham Robson is working on another dozen or so books to include the Austin-Healey 3000 through to the WRC Ford Focus – I can't wait!

It’s three for the price of one this time as I have been reading the Ford Escort Mk1, Subaru Impreza and Lancia Stratos in the Rally Giants series, written by Graham Robson and published by Veloce and thoroughly recommend all three volumes. Priced at £14.99, each has an interesting 8 x 8in format with about 125 pages containing lots of well chosen pictures, mostly in colour, so looks impressive enough for the coffee table, yet due to the author’s experience and attention to getting his facts right, must have a place in the serious enthusiast’s bookshelves, from whence they will frequently be taken as a source of reference.

A must-have for Impreza fans.

For nearly 20 years, Prodrive has run the works in regards to Subaru's rally prowess, including providing the expertise that has seen them storm the championship scene. As well as detailing this story, this book also provides a highly in-depth look at the Impreza itself, with full specifications and achievements of all the WRC models.

The compact book is chock-full of great colour photos, many with the WRX seemingly airborne, and no doubt on its way to another victory. Text-wise, a good chunk of everything is devoted to a year-by-year breakdown of the car's achievements, with a car and team section up the front providing information on everything from the inspiration behind the model to its star drivers.

All that said if you're a rally buff, or just love Subaru's muscled-up monster, this is the perfect book for you to pursue.

The book covers the development of the company, the race program and the cars in depth, before plunging into the World Rally era of Colin McRae, Tommi Makinen and Fetter Solberg.                     [sinopsis_editor] => The Audi Quattro is a Rally Giant because it was the first – not the most sophisticated, but the first and very successful too – to combine four-wheel-drive, and a turbocharged engine. It was the first to run with more than 300bhp. Because it was re homologated/transformed from Group 4 into Group B in 1983, it was also the first successful Group B car. The Quattro dominated rallying from the start of 1981 unti late 1984 (when the Peugeot 205 T16 took over). Quattros won no fewer than 23 World rallies from 1981 to 1985 won the Makes Championship in 1982 and 1984, and drivers Hannu Mikkola (1983) and Stig Blomqvist (1984) also won the World Drivers' series in Quattros. The Quattro dominated the World and European rally scene in the first half of the 1980s.
