Les routes de chez nous raconte l'histoire de la route française et de son environnement à travers les siècles, mais aussi l'amélioration du balisage, de l'orientation, de la cartographie. Ce sont aussi les " pionniers ", ces " fous du volant " qui s'appelaient De Dion, Renault, Panhard, Jenatzy... et qui lançaient leurs machines bringuebalantes à plus de 100 km/heure sur les routes n'ayant vu passer jusqu'alors que des attelages hippomobiles. C'est aussi la route et la guerre, les exodes, les invasions, les routes bombardées et ravagées, labourées par les chenilles des blindés. Puis vient l'époque où les charrons deviennent garagistes, les épiciers deviennent pompistes, les postes à essence se transforment en stations-service " à l'américaine ". Le développement du tourisme routier, allant de pair avec la banalisation de l'automobile, voit l'apparition des premières hécatombes routières et le renforcement du Code de la Route. La route est devenue au XXe siècle un enjeu commercial incontournable avec la réclame, la publicité, les affiches, les murs peints, les magazines. En ville, les avenues, les boulevards, les rues, leurs voies rapides sur les berges, et autres boulevards périphériques se percent et se développent avec leurs zones bleues, leurs sens uniques, leurs paramètres... Ce livre, qui se lit comme un roman, se referme sur une évocation de quelques peintres et artistes de la route et de l'automobile tels que René Vincent, Ernest Montaut et Guy Sabran, qui ont su fixer des vivions étonnantes, riches et colorées de ce monde multiforme.

These examine 101s natural beauty that has made it what it is. 



Every chapter includes features focusing on places of special interest; and there will also be Voice of the Road spreads profiling the highways key personalities, as well as numerous quotations from authors, poets and songwriters who have been inspired by it. Specially created maps will parallel the text, and the book concludes with an extensive resources section, giving contact addresses and website details for road-related organizations and en route attractions.

From the Deep South, steeped in the tragic legacy of slavery and the magic of rhythm and blues, to the lily-white North Shore of Lake Superior, inhabited largely by the descendants of Scandinavian immigrants, this evocative and artfully executed celebration of Highway 61 is organized as a "road trip" book in three acts: 1) Louisiana to Memphis, 2) Memphis to Wisconsin, and 3) Wisconsin to Canada. 



As such, it provides an unprecedented and visually intense look at the roads past and present, tying into the people associated with the cities and towns along the way (Robert Johnson, Bob Dylan, Elvis), the literary locales (Mark Twains Hannibal, Mo.), its proximity to historic sites (Vicksburg), and less-famous but nevertheless interesting folks (Supa-Chikan, a folk artist/musician who builds guitars from 5-gallon gas cans). Each of the eight states through which 61 passes is represented.

Tim Steil has worked as a reporter in radio, television, and print for almost 20 years, including stints with the Chicago Tribune, Daily Southtown, and numerous national magazines. He is also the author of MBIs Route 66 and Fantastic Filling Stations.
