The prototype Y-Type was constructed in 1939 with an intended launch at the Earls Court Motor show, the following year. However, as a result of the hostilities the public had to wait a further eight years before production commenced. All prototypes originating from the MG Factory at Abingdon were allocated numbers prefixed by the letters EX; this practice continued until the mid-fifties. Although the prototype of the MG Y-Type was primarily a Morris concept from Cowley, much of the fleshing out was completed at Abingdon. As a result it was allocated the prototype number EX.166. When the car was launched the MG Sales Literature stated A brilliant new Member of the famous MG breed. This new One and a Quarter Litre car perpetuates the outstanding characteristics of its successful predecessors - virile acceleration, remarkable road manner, instant response to controls, and superb braking. A lively car, the new One and a Quarter Litre provides higher standards of performance. The UK price of the car was £525 ex works plus purchase tax of £146.11.8d. The car featured an independent front suspension layout designed by Gerald Palmer and Jack Daniels (an MG Draughtsman). Independent front suspension was very much the latest technology at the time and the Y-Type became the first Nuffield product and one of the first British production cars with this feature. The separate chassis facilitated the Jackall System, which consisted of four hydraulically activated rams that were clamped to the chassis, two at the front and two at the rear. The jacks were connected to a Jackall Pump on the bulkhead that enabled the front, the back, or the entire car to be raised to facilitate a wheel change.
The Magnette ZA was launched in 1953 at the London Motor Show and deliveries started in March 1954. Production continued until 1956. It was the first monocoque car to bear the MG badge. The Magnette was designed by Gerald Palmer who made his name with the Jowett Javelin, and featured modern Italian inspired styling. Power came from the then new four cylinder 1.5 L (1489 cc) B-Series engine with twin 1¼ inch SU carburettors delivering 60 bhp, driving the rear wheels through a four speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios. Suspension was independent at the front using coil springs and had a live axle with half elliptic leaf springs at the rear. The steering was by rack and pinion. Hydraulically operated Lockheed 10 in (254 mm) drum brakes were fitted to front and rear wheels. The car had individual front seats and a rear bench trimmed in leather and the dashboard and door cappings were in polished wood. The heater was standard but the radio still an optional extra. The similar Wolseley 4/44, first sold one year earlier, used the 1250 cc engine from the MG TF. Although visually similar, the MG has lower suspension and only the front doors, boot lid and roof panels are shared. The 4/44 was replaced in 1956 by the 15/50. In 1955 the Motor magazine tested a Magnette and recorded a top speed of 79.7 mph (128.3 km/h) acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 23.1 seconds and a fuel consumption of 24.9 miles per imperial gallon was recorded. The test car cost £914 including taxes.

The ZA was replaced by the Magnette ZB in 1956. Power was increased to 64 hp (48 kW) by fitting 1½ inch carburettors, increasing the compression ratio from 7.5 to 8.3 and modifying the manifolding, and a semi-automatic transmission was an option. The interior was improved by fitting a wood dashboard and there was also a Varitone model with larger rear window and optional two tone paintwork. The extra power meant the top speed was now 86 mph (138 km/h) and the 0-60 mph time came down to 18.5 seconds.

This portfolio of international articles traces the progress of MG's post-war sporting saloons & tourers. Models covered are the 1 1/4 litre YA, YB & YT Y-Types and the ZA & ZB Magnettes. Including are road tests together with performance data, new model intros, long term reports & touring articles. Featured are buying guides & advice on acquiring a good used MG.

Description

This book is a pictorial study of men and women drawn from all parts of the country to this little known rural town to take part in the building of a motor car . These workers were a mixture of skilled people from the depressed areas of England and Wales together with the few MG car workers who made the journey with the MG from Oxford to the rural town of Abingdon and its largely
farming community. This mixture coalesced to become a work force that built a legend- The MG. With 160 photos of factory life both car building and during the war effort this is a fascinating story.
Synopsis

The MG, from being a Morris car modified in the corner of a backstreet workshop, evolved into a sports car in its own right. The demand for this fiery little car caused the production to move to four different and progressively larger sites in and around Oxford, finally moving out of the city ten miles away to Abingdon and a factory that might have been custom built for it . This factory was on the site of a tannery that had inflated to over twice its size catering for the 1914-18 wartime demand for its leather products. The coming of peace caused it to deflate back to its previous level of production, leaving empty the rows of large hangars that had housed the wartime production effort. It was to this factory that Cecil Kimber, who had resigned his position as Managing Director of Morris Garages, brought his brain-child that he called the MG.
Twin rows of eighteen inch (45cm) high raised tracks were built. The chassis was brought from the workshop where it been made and, after the assembling of its suspension, it was mounted on to the track to start its journey from one stage to the next, finally emerging as a complete motor car. The car would then be tested on the factory’s own test track before being deemed fit for its eagerly awaiting new owner.
The men who took part in the assembling of the car were but a part of the organisation that went toward the finished article. Managers, Office staff, Storemen , Inspectors, Painters, Test drivers, Labourers and cleaners were all members of the great team, all had their part to play.
As they worked together so did they play together, ground was obtained for a football pitch, room was found in the town for a snooker club and a place where the men could join for a well earned drink This later developed into a modern Sports Club with football, hockey and cricket pitches.
The risk of fire in the factory was always present and to cope with this the factory had its own fiire engine and a full time fireman augmented when needed by a volunteer crew of factory workers, who trained in their spare time.
MG Abingdon’s famous racing reputation gained in the 1930s made it the obvious place to site BMCs Competition Department with its maiden venture the 1955 Le Mans 24 hour race.
The 160, many never seen before, pictures in this book chronicle every aspect of the factory from its opening amidst great euphoria in 1930 to its closing amidst great recriminations in 1980.

Review by Paul Guinness for Classic Car Mart, June 2006

Another in Veloce’s SpeedPro series, this softback title does exactly what it says on the cover. And although it’s not cheap at nearly thirty quid, its impressive detail and easy-to-understand instructions make it worth every penny for anybody thinking of squeezing a V8 engine into their humble MGB.

Written by acknowledged MGB expert Roger Williams, this book doesn’t just cover the procedures involved in replacing the B’s 1.8-litre four-pot with a Rover V8; it also explains why you might consider a Chevrolet or Ford small-block transplant instead, giving you an interesting range of options to choose from.

Completely redesigned, updated, revised and enlarged from earlier versions, How To Give Your MGB V8 Power offers clear step-by-step instructions throughout its 224 pages, as well as over 500 illustrations, most of them in colour.

In these days of booming interest in the modified classics scene, the timing couldn’t be better. This radically improved Third Edition of an already decent book deserves to do well.

Review by Mike R for Classics Monthly, May 2006

This book offers a step by step guide to replacing the MGB's standard four-cylinder lump with a nice big V8. Wisely, the author covers not only the 3.5-litre Rover unit (which of course some B's were fitted with as standard but also Buick, Ford and Chevrolet engines too. Everything from gearbox and clutch to suspension, electrics, wheels and tyres is included with full colour pictures throughout. Buy this book and get a good idea of what you're letting yourself in for.

Review from Hemmings Motor News

Almost since the MGB hit the streets, naughty owners have lusted for the throaty roar and the seat-of-the-pants thrust of a 'torquey' V8. But unlike pulling that six-cylinder tooth on your Nova and lowering in a 350-cu.in. small-block V8 in its place, installing a V8 in an MGB isn't exactly a plug 'n' play exercise. At least until you start digging into Roger Williams' How to Give Your MGB V8 Power.

Rover V8 power is the decided choice here, but Williams does a good job laying out the pros and cons of that engine, plus the 302-cu.in. Ford, and the 350-cu.in. Chevrolet. Williams covers all the bases, including which car to consider (for once, rubber bumper Bs are the preferred choice), which engine, which transmission and rear end. Brake, electrical system, driveshaft and suspension modifications are all covered in detail. The book is billed as "step-by-step instructions," but it's really an overview of what needs to get done. There are over 500 color photos, but none of them are very large. Of course, if they were, the book would be 500 pages long, rather than 218. Our only major complaint is not necessarily aimed at this book, but all shop books that attempt to be relevant in the garage: Why aren't they spiral bound, so you can keep them open when you're actually turning a wrench?

This is the fourth edition of Roger Williams' guide to hotrodding your MGB. Not having a handy copy of the third edition, and not being supplied what's exactly new by the publishing company, I think we'd be safe in saying that in three editions, Williams probably had the steps down pat, so if you can find a copy of the third edition on sale somewhere, you're probably safe buying that.

Synopsis

This book is essential reading for every MGB enthusiast. The mechanical aspects and the restoration of the vehicle have been written about in numerous publications but the so often maligned electrical systems has never before been comprehensively covered. For those new to vehicle electrical systems the book provides a simple primer using mechanical analogies. Each system in the car has its own chapter, with simple and uncluttered circuit diagrams in which each wire can be seen in its real colours. More than a how-to-do guide, the book also explains the “why” of each system and procedure, aiding diagnostics when things don’t go quite as they should. The many fault finding guides help pin those elusive problems down. A must have for those wishing to improve the car for reliability and safety.
