LAUNCHED at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show, the Porsche 928 was intended to replace the legendary 911. Although it failed Porsche in this respect, the 928 met with immediate acclaim and even won the Car of the Year award in1978, making it the first and so far only sports car to ever win the title. Although its water-cooled, front-engined configuration met with the expected protestations from Porsche traditionalists, the new Grand Tourer was filled with technical innovations, including an adjustable instrument panel and the Weissach rear axle. This new take on the semi-trailing arm suspension design was created to eliminate oversteer. Sometimes called passive rear wheel steering this technology was so good that it could actually induce understeer under certain driving conditions.
The large hatchback body featured plenty of aluminium in the form of doors, bonnet and front wings as a means of saving weight. While the stylish pop-up headlights were an attractive design feature, that being German, actually worked.
By the time Porsche introduced the final incarnation in 1992, the V8 equipped GTS, the 928 had become a fast, comfortable and very capable 170mph super car.
Buying any second hand car is fraught with danger, but finding a good used Porsche can lead you through an absolute minefield of potentially wallet draining possibilities. For-warned is for-armed, so a small investment in this book could save a fortune in the long term by helping to avoid the lemons. The author, David Hemmings, has owned a 928 for 25 years and draws on his considerable experience to help the reader find the best car their budget will allow.
Broken down into 17 informative chapters, this handy sized book is ideal for taking with you when looking over a potential purchase and covers many useful topics, including if a 928 really is the right car for you, running costs and all of the bits and pieces that are expensive or difficult to put right. There are loads of detailed pictures sprinkled about the pages showing the different generations of cars, trim options and all of the little things only someone really familiar with these cars would know to look-out for. There are useful sections on how to buy a car, including how to find a good one at auction, what paper work should accompany a well looked after example, the various costs and problems associated with restoring one and how a well sorted car should behave on the test drive.
There may be plenty of cars to choose from out there, but this book is all about how to buy with your head, not your heart. If youre a 928 novice this handy sized buyers guide is essential reading, especially if you bear in mind that you wont be able to fix much on a bad car with the £9.99 you saved by ignoring this book.
