WO launched his first model, the 3-litre, in 1921, as a sporting car for the discerning driver, intending that it should provide 80mph performance, with exceptional reliability based on the quality of its engineering and construction. It became the favourite of wealthy young sportsmen and, to prove a point, 3-litres won at Le Mans in 1924 and 1927. While still in production it was joined in 1927 by the 90mph 4½-litre, still a four-cylinder, which won at Le Mans in 1928. The best-known Bentley, the supercharged 4½, was offered in 1929 and was a genuine 110mph car at a time when most cars struggled to achieve 60mph.
The author commences with an account of the design and development of the 3-litre prototypes against the background of WO’s experience as a designer, particularly his work on aero engine design in World War I.
Then comes a detailed examination and analysis of the production 3-litre – its engine, transmission, chassis and running gear – and its evolution through the “Standard” model, Speed Model and Super Sports, with extracts from contemporary reports and road tests. This is followed by equivalent coverage of the 4½-litre and 4½-litre supercharged models. The author gives an account of the cars’ illustrious competition history, principally at Le Mans, and reviews the range of bodies offered by coachbuilders, from stark two-seaters to overweight limousines.
Ten outstanding examples of the cars have been photographed specially for this book and are featured in detail in some 150 colour shots. There are also more than 150 black-and-white photographs drawn from archive sources.

Synopsis

From a small design team working on the Silver Spirit/Mulsanne, to becoming Chief Stylist, Graham Hull peels back the curtain on an idiosyncratic institution during his time at Crewe. Throwing light on a factory motivated as much by pride, as the bottom-line, all the projects, whether production, special commission, or aborted designs, are covered, and the often unique styling process is explored. This process was a key element in the resurgence of the dormant Bentley marque, that, with its fortunes on the rise, became the star of the Geneva Motor Show, attracting commissions from wealthy enthusiasts for totally bespoke vehicles. Founding fathers Royce and Rolls melded engineering with marketing, but as marketing took over, this union fractured. The drama of how this British institution was divided between BMW and VW, and how aesthetic design, never cherished by British management, was increasingly recognised, is fundamental to the story. The bewildering number of projects during the 1990s is a genuine eye-opener and a phenomena that demanded unique peoples, skills, and facilities.

His relative youth at the time is perhaps the reason that he is a forgotten hero; a man who today receives little credit for the legacy that he left behind, even though at the time of his death on July 12th 1910 he was one of the most famous men in the country. His loss was regarded as a national tragedy. 
Today he is most famous for the partnership he forged with Henry Royce to form Rolls-Royce, a name that today is as synonymous with excellence as it was then. Yet Rolls was a national hero long before he met Royce in Manchester in 1904.
The son of a peer, Rolls was one of the first, and certainly the youngest of Britain’s pioneer motorists. He was a successful racing driver and achieved what many believed impossible – selling the motor car to Britain.
With the reliability of the car achieved, Rolls immersed himself in conquering the next great frontier, the air. He made his first ascent in a balloon in 1898 and was experimenting with the possibilities of powered flight as early as 1901. One of the first Britons to fly, he made the first return crossing of the Channel in 1909 in a Wright Flyer and was acclaimed across the world.
Charles Rolls was an enigma, a man of great paradox, and yet he was a great patriot, racing driver, record breaker, aviator, one of the United Kingdom’s great industrialists, a pioneer in the true sense of the word and he had a prophetic ability to see the way of the future.

What might surprise is how little the fundamentals have changed and the information in this book will still be relevant to a significant quantity of classic owners. 

It's very technical, packed with data and graphs rather than any pictures, but classily presented and, at that price, an engaging curiosity for more than just hardcore R-R enthusiasts.
