The Author - 59 years of age, Bill Ballard served in various U.K. Government Departments for 36 years before accepting early retirement in September 1999 and emigrating to Australia two months later. He now devotes his spare time to writing books and articles for magazines on transport-related subjects. He acquired his first Small Ford - a 1946 Fordson E04C 5cwt panel van - in 1978 and has since owned and restored several Small Fords. He only parted with the E04C van because he could not afford to ship it out to Australia, having already committed himself to bringing three of his collection of Small Fords with him! Since 1979, he has been a financial member of several clubs catering for Small Fords. At various times between 1979 and 1992 he served the Ford Sidevalve Owners' Club as Manchester Branch Organiser, Outer London (West) Group Organiser and Publicity Officer. Between 1995 and 1999 he served The Small Ford Club as their Chairman, Outer London (West) Group Organiser, Registrar and Editor, producing their quarterly magazine, Talking Small Fords from 1995-98. He has been the Australian Co-ordinator of the Ford Y & C Model Register since November 1999 and is currently a Committee Member of the Ford 8 & 10hp Side Valve Club Victoria Inc. Whilst serving as Registrar of The Small Ford Club he set up the Register of Small Fords, a record of all the Small Fords known to exist throughout the world, which he still maintains to this day. Bill has built up a very comprehensive knowledge of Small Fords, especially body and chassis numbers and build dates and is one of the world's acknowledged experts on these matters.
