Jaguar Drivers' Club SS registrar Crouch has done a superb job with this 196-page full-colour effort covering the 'sidevalve' period (1931-‘35). Every production year gets a chapter up to the launch of the SS90 two-seaters, each illustrated with shots of surviving cars. Additional chapters cover SSs in competition and extensive analysis of factory records. Early SS customers included George Formby - not even Crouch can say which '33 SSI coupé, then registered XJ 7171, he owned – Amelia Earhart, Bud Flanagan and many an aristocrat. Some of the photography is amateurish and in places the printing is over-inked, but that can’t spoil this important record.

Crouch is now preparing a book on the pushrod-engined SS Jaguars from 1936-‘51
