Many thousands of different types of vehicles were used by the armies during the Second World War for various roles, including the fighting vehicles such as armoured cars and tanks. Today these are very popular with enthusiasts who restore these historic vehicles to their pristine state and attend specialist gatherings around the country and across Europe. This interest extends to America where there are many owners of historic vehicles. This book sets out to introduce some of the better known examples of these preserved vehicles and also some of those which are not so well known. This range includes trucks to keep the armies supplied, ambulances, motorcycles, armoured cars and of course the impressive range of tanks from the smallest to some of the largest. Some vehicles are so rare that examples have been recreated using original designs and together with the original vehicles their history is told in this book. From jeeps to tanks, landrovers to ambulances, this is the perfect book for recreating, restoring and exploring the history of these vehicles that were vital to the war effort. JOHN NORRIS served for six years in the Grenadier Guards. He has travelled extensively and visited battlefields across the world. He escorts battlefield tours to Dunkirk, Normandy and Arnhem. He works as a columnist on several leading specialist military magazines and liaises with re-enactment groups, as well as classic military vehicle societies. He has written a number of military history titles, including Pistols at Dawn and Artillery: A History, Welsh Castles at War and Medieval Siege Warfare (The History Press). He lives in Glastonbury, Somerset. - See more at: http://www.thehistorypress.co.uk/index.php/world-war-ii-trucks-and-tanks.html#sthash.Vb5Los5x.dpuf

PIER PAOLO BATTISTELLI / FILIPPO CAPPELLANO
The Italian army, unlike those of the British and French, did not use tanks in combat during World War I and, by November 1918, only one training unit equipped with French Schneider and Renault tanks had been formed. Consequently, during the 1920s the Italian army had just one single tank type in its armoured inventory – the Fiat 3000. Only in 1927 was the first tank unit forme...

  • FIRST WORLD WAR TANKS
    BARTHOLOMEW
Although tanks have become a symbol of military power, the first tanks were created as a temporary solution to the deadlock created by trench warfare. The early designs were unsophisticated and had little success when they were first used by the British Army on the Somme in 1916. The battle of Cambrai, however, proved that tanks were effective, and they were used extensively in...

During World War II, the US Marine Corps formed six tank battalions that battled through the harsh conditions of the Pacific Theatre. Using the same basic tanks as the US Army, notably the M3 and M5A1 light tanks and the M4 Sherman medium tank, the marines made both technical and tactical innovations to make them more effective in the fight against the Japanese. Deep wading equ...

The M8 light armored car was the only significant wheeled combat vehicle used by the US Army in World War II. In conjunction with the lightly armed utility version, the M20, it was the staple of the army's cavalry squadrons for use in reconnaissance and scouting. First entering combat in Italy in 1943, it was widely used throughout the campaign in northwest Europe, though its o...
