TREVOR ROWE
Note: Text is in English & Spanish. 'The Narrow Gauge Railways of Spain' is the first country-wide survey of the Spanish narrow gauge since Allen and Wheeler's classic 'Steam on the Sierra' published 35 years ago. It is pictorial history with photos dominating the pages. All known public narrow gauge railways are mentioned, together with some interurbans, and industrial lines of special interest. Prominently featured are British-built locomotives, some still at work in their 70th or 80th years. The main theme of the narrative is historical, but where railways still exist (mainly in the north where 2,OOOkm of metre gauge survives) the story is brought right up to date. This second volume in the set begins in Madrid with its metre gauge suburban lines, continues via Cercedilla, then north via Valladolid and the Castilian Secondary Railways to the Miranda/Castejon are where four now closed narrow gauge lines are discussed, then to coverage of the Utrillas line, then coverage of Europe's longest narrow gauge line at El Ferrol on the border with France. The book covers both open and closed lines as well as many industrial and mining railways of various gauges that criss-cross the region. Finally, there is a look at the famous Ponferrada-Villablino, last bastion of steam traction in Spain. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. With maps. 96 pages.
