D'avril 1931 à avril 1932, une cinquantaine d'hommes, répartis en deux groupes, sont partis à la conquête de l'Asie pour relier Beyrouth à Pékin par la Route de la Soie, en traversant l'Himalaya et le désert de Gobie en autochenille, en camion et même à cheval. Ni roman ni récit, cet ouvrage est le témoignage au jour le jour de ceux qui ont vécu ces longs mois au péril de leur vie. Un album photos des événements les plus marquants, des anotations et des réflexions prises sur le vif, un calendrier de cette aventure où des hommes hors du commun sont allés au bout du monde sur leurs "drôles de machines".

Puis d'un banquier italien de Tunis qui, à l'occasion, lui prête sa Bugatti à compresseur. « Les jours où il me passait le volant et où les huit bougies consentaient à s'allumer ensemble, fouetté par l'air et durement secoué, complètement assourdi, couvert d'huile, je connaissais une sorte de bonheur parfait. » Petit à petit, son amour de l'automobile et sa passion pour le désert vont tracer un sillon qu'il ne va plus, dès lors, quitter. Jusqu'à le pousser à organiser, en 1929, une traversée du Sahara en Bugatti. Qui sera effectuée à plus de 100 km/h et est racontée par Loiseau lui-même dans cet réédition remarquable, qui mêle carnet de routes et digressions sur le milieu automobile et l'Afrique, photos prises à l'époque et dessins réalisés aujourd'hui par le Bugattiste François Chevalier. Un véritable petit bijou et un témoignage précieux sur une époque qui permettait aux folies les plus douces de trouver un terreau favorable à leur épanouissement
